AT&T has recently field suit against Verizon over it’s recent iPhone-inspired “There’s a map for that” commercials. Verizon’s ad campaigns tout it’s 3G network by comparing it’s coverage to AT&T’s 3G Network. AT&T’s suit involves monetary damages suffered due to the ads and requests an injuction preventing Verizon from depicting non-3G coverage areas in AT&T’s network as black spaces on the maps in the commercials.

It’s been less than a month since OS 3.1 was released, but Apple has just released OS 3.1.2 for the iPhone. This update fixes the widely reported issue where the iPhone would not wake from sleep, and also fixes an issue involving video playback and cellular service.

AT&T announced that it has “taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T’s wireless network.” This means that iPhone users in the U.S. will now be able to use VoIP apps when they’re connected to AT&T’s 3G network, rather than being limited to just Wi-Fi.

Apparently a 30% rate of dropped calls is perfectly normal for AT&T in New York City. Gizmodo reports that one of its readers recently visited his local Apple Store Genius Bar in NYC complaining that 30% of his attempted calls made on his iPhone were being dropped, and was informed after testing that it was actually only 22% of his calls being dropped and such performance was considered normal by AT&T’s standards for the area. The reader provided Gizmodo with a copy of the Genius Bar work authorization form noting the technician’s assessment of the situation.

As promised AT&T has activated MMS for the iPhone in the US today, however users will notice that the AT&T 5.5 Carrier update requires the still buggy iPhone OS 3.1 Firmware, which for many is a deal breaker considering the possibility of losing contacts and use of email among other issues. Well you can still manually get the carrier file without updating to 3.1, but it requires a few more steps.

AT&T announced today on its Facebook page that the update for MMS on the iPhone would be available “late morning” Pacific Time on Friday the 25th. The new carrier file will be available to download via iTunes.
