As promised AT&T has activated MMS for the iPhone in the US today, however users will notice that the AT&T 5.5 Carrier update requires the still buggy iPhone OS 3.1 Firmware, which for many is a deal breaker considering the possibility of losing contacts and use of email among other issues. Well you can still manually get the carrier file without updating to 3.1, but it requires a few more steps.

AT&T announced today on its Facebook page that the update for MMS on the iPhone would be available “late morning” Pacific Time on Friday the 25th. The new carrier file will be available to download via iTunes.

Rumor is that within the next two weeks Apple will be releasing the 3.1 firmware update. The firmware would contain a carrier file from AT&T activating MMS capability on the iPhone.
